Keith's Reasons
Hello world! My name is Keith Kirwen. At 25 years of age I quit my job as a therapist and wilderness guide in northwest Montana and came to Spain to snowboard for a winter.
Fortunately, the winds brought me to this magical mountain valley called the Val d?Aran. That was in 1995. I fell in love from the start. My top reasons for thinking this is the greatest place on the planet are the following:
*The landscape, year round, simply knocks my socks off. Words can?t describe it. You have to come and see for yourself.
*The mountain sports activities are endless ? seriously! Skiing, boarding, heli-skiing, mushing, sledding, cross country skiing, ski mountaineering, snowshoeing, trail running, hiking, trekking, cycling, mountain biking, downhill biking, rafting, canyoning, fishing, bird watching, hunting, rock climbing, swimming, ice skating??..Endless!
*The cuisine (especially the tapas and the beluga quality caviar made just down the street) is world class.
*Where else can find an active language and culture from the middle ages called Aranese. The people here speak 3 to 5 languages!
*The architecture with the stone exterior and the slate roofs is unlike anything I have seen anywhere. All of the villages have churches from the 12th century built largely in Romanesque style. The majority are in great condition. This combination simply gives me goose bumps.
*The incredible number of events and festivals and activities year round just make this Val d?Aran a really fun place to live.
*The Spanish or Aranese culture simply fills me with joy. Sunday lunches with family and friends that start at 2 o´clock in afternoon and finish at 8 o´clock in the evening and going out to dinner at 10 o´clock at night make me happy.
*Lastly, I would say that one of things I like most about living here is that I always see people I know, like and admire wherever I go. It is their kindness and the fact that they allow me to be ?one of them? that makes my daily life here in Aran simply amazing.
